We are going through this process right now, or have been over the past 3 months. It is not as easy as one would expect. A lot of our friends say to just chuck stuff. But, some items are very valuable to us. We worked extremely hard in our early years to have some nice things. We purchased quality items that would last. Today, quality products are harder to find. We are having to evaluate the cost of storage verses the value of the items in our equation to retain stuff.

Rather than sell on Craig’s list and deal with the nickle and diming, we have donated many items to charities. We have found the self satisfaction and tax deduction more beneficial than what we could get on Craig’s list and having to deal with perfect strangers coming to our home. We feel the same about garage sales. Our experience with our one and only garage sale was people will offer a quarter for something priced at $10 worth $30.

And, the one thing that no one on a blog talks about. What happens if you get rid of everything and sail for a couple of years and then stop for one reason or another. Very few people close out the blog. It just goes dark and so the reasons people stop can be somewhat mystical. Some people don’t adapt to the lifestyle, others get sick. Whatever the reason, it would suck to rid ones self of all belongings only to have to purchase it all again later.

    • Mark and Cindy – I completely understand your troubles with evaluating the items that you spent so much money on. It’s usually tough to part with things that you worked so hard to obtain.

Garage sales are tough, but sometimes its an easy way to get rid of your junkier things.

You bring up a great topic – The dark side of cruising shows that sometimes it just doesn’t work out. It’s always good to have a Plan B and think about these things before they happen. We are definitely ‘in that boat’. Most of our belongings have been sold off or donated and we would be starting with very little if we ever moved back to land.

Great food for thought! As always, we appreciate your comments and perspective!
